About L. Preston

One person, a small house, and a habit of testing things for longer than is strictly reasonable.

Hi. I'm L.

I write about the practical, unglamorous parts of living well: the home systems that stop a week falling apart, the closet math that gets you dressed in two minutes, the products that earn their counter space and the ones that quietly do not.

Why this site exists

There is a lot of lifestyle content that is beautiful and useless. There is also a lot of product content that was written by someone who has never held the product. I got tired of both, so I started writing the version I wanted to read: specific, tested, and willing to tell you when something is not worth the money.

How I test things

Nothing gets recommended here until it has been in normal use for at least eight weeks. Not a weekend, not a unboxing, not a spec comparison. Eight weeks of the actual thing, in an actual house.

I look for three things:

  • Does it still work at week eight, or has it quietly started failing?
  • Did it create a new annoyance while solving the old one?
  • Do I reach for it without thinking about it?

That third one is the real test. The products I recommend most enthusiastically are almost always the ones I forgot I was testing.

How I make money

Some links on this site are affiliate links, which means I earn a small commission if you buy through them. It costs you nothing extra. That commission is what pays for the products I test and the time I spend testing them.

It also creates an obvious conflict of interest, so here is how I handle it: I write about things I returned. I name the cheaper option when it wins, which it often does. And no brand has ever paid to be included here or seen a post before it was published. If that ever changes, it will be labeled clearly at the top of the post.

You can read the full affiliate disclosure if you want the formal version.

What you will find here

Four things, roughly:

Say hello

I read everything, even when it takes me a while to reply. Get in touch if you have a question, a correction, or a product you think I should test. Corrections especially. If I got something wrong I would rather know.

The Sunday note

One useful thing, every Sunday.

A short letter with what I bought, what I returned, and one idea worth trying this week.
